The word fear comes from the Latin term metus. It is a mood disturbance that produces anguish before a danger or an eventual damage, either product of the imagination or own of the reality.
The concept is also used to name the rejection or aversion that an individual feels that something bad or opposite happens to what he intends for himself and his loved ones. For example: "When the thief took out the gun, I felt very afraid", "I was never as afraid as when I first read a book by Stephen King", "I'm afraid Uncle Ernesto doesn't get over the operation".
It can be said that fear results unpleasant For those who suffer. This emotion, however, also works as a survival method since it alerts the people and the animals facing a threat. In this way, a zebra that feels fear for lions will flee as soon as they notice the presence of its predator. Something similar will be done by a man who, when listening to shots, is put on guard for fear of being injured.
Although we are talking about fear from a general point of view, we have to be aware that there are different types of it. Thus, among the most common classifications we find the following:
Fear of changes. Both adults and children can suffer this dread to modify not only their routine but also their environment. This can occur because of a change of school, work, city, friends ...
Fear of the dark. If there is a dread that is very typical of the little ones, it is this that can occur as a result of nightmares, of imaginable situations or of stories that have frightened them. In this case, children who suffer from it are usual to have to sleep with some light on in their room.
Fear of animals. We can all suffer this fear of animals in general or one in particular. The best way to overcome it is to be well informed of those, of the dangers that they can bring with them and also of all the good they have.
Fear of storms. In the infantile stage it is when this dread occurs more frequently, however, there are many adults who continue to suffer from it and in particular to the mentioned storms and to the thunder themselves.
In addition to these different kinds of fear, we can also underline that there are others such as the fear of separation, the so-called "school children" who are those in which there is fear of failure or public activities, or nightlife.
It is important to highlight that, beyond its biological and psychological function and its qualification as an unpleasant emotion for individuals, fear also appears in the art As a form of entertainment. That is why it constitutes a literary genre (like stories or scary novels) and a film industry genre (cinema rated as horror) by itself.
This means that people can buy a book or go to the movies to feel fear, although they know that this emotion is generated by a artistic product that will not generate real damage.
